The rich tradition of storytelling is interwoven into the fabric of First Nations, Inuit and Métis culture. Stories are shared to teach, inspire and entertain, they share history, culture and spiritual beliefs connecting generations. Yonneh’ón:we explores different artistic mediums and the power of storytelling, honouring the life-giving spirit of story.

Meet Your Performers

Jillian Morris, Collingwood Poet Laureate & Event Host

Jillian Morris is Kanien’kehaka and band member of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, currently residing in Collingwood.

Jillian has established her presence in community as a writer with local media, publishing pieces that contribute to fostering a healthier Indigenous/non-Indigenous relationships. She believes that art is an impactful medium to build bridges between cultures and worldviews. Jillian’s poetry layers traditional teachings and the interconnection with the natural world to explore identity, redress untruths and foster connection.

Layla Staats, Film Maker & Activist

Layla Staats is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in digital media, marketing and content creation. She has trained thousands on the power of video for storytelling. Layla is a successful entrepreneur stepping outside of the box and sharing her experience and knowledge with other aspiring entrepreneurs with a story to tell. Layla Staats is a 4th generation survivor of residential schools in Canada and stands to inspire others like her who are on their own reclamation story.

Blood & Water, Documentary

A self-narrated documentary exposing new light on the modern day impact and generational trauma caused from residential schools. Layla Staats is Mohawk Turtle Clan from the Six Nations of the Grand River and shares her family’s journey to reclamation through their eternal connection to the water and the discovery of traditional teachings.

Red Sky Performance, Choreographed by Sandra Laronde

Red Sky Performance is a leading company of contemporary Indigenous dance in Canada and globally. Their work explores the relationship between movement, music, drama and image.

Dancers will be sharing an excerpt from their production Miigis: Underwater Panther inspired by a formidable journey from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. Miigis reveals the power of nature through dance, music, theatrical innovation and a fusion of athleticism through storytelling.

Post Event Social

End the evening with reflection and great conversation catered by Low Down, Collingwood’s cocktail and snack bar. Enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Note that peanuts are used in snacks and are in the kitchen.
