The second of two films we will be sharing as part of event two of the Yonnhe’ón:we Indigenous Arts Series. The screening of Warrior Spirit will be complimented by a discussion with the director and actor Will George led by Jillian Morris\, Collingwood Poet Laureate as well as music from J.D. Crosstown. Jillian has established her presence in community as a writer with local media\, publishing pieces that contribute to fostering a healthier Indigenous/non-Indigenous relationships. She believes that art is an impactful medium to build bridges between cultures and worldviews. Jillian’s poetry layers traditional teachings and the interconnection with the natural world to explore identity\, redress untruths and foster connection. J.D. CrosstownInternational touring artist J.D. (Jacob Douglas) Crosstown\, grew up in Neyaashiinigmiing\, the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation\, ON. Picking up the guitar at age 9\, Crosstown didnt start performing in front of crowds until after lockdown\, but within a short time of sharing his craft\, it has brought him great opportunities. Embarking on his first overseas tour in Germany in 2023\, as well as travelling across Canada. Many of Crosstown’s influences have helped shape his sound\, including Townes Van Zandt\, Joan Baez\, John Prine and Bob Dylan. Having always gravitated towards folk music for its ability to command audiences and paint epic stories in a short period of time with only a few words. Crosstown decribes his own music as traditional folk\, country/blues\, and says that he\, “hopes that his songs give people a place to lean back on too.” Crosstown is a storyteller and captures the poignancy of a time and place\, of heartbreak\, loss\, hope\, love\, adventure and friendship. Warrior SpiritWill George’s directorial debut follows his journey to stop the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project from being built on his Nation’s unceded land without their consent. Warrior Spirit delves into healing from ongoing colonization and trauma\, as Will faces prison time in the colonial court system. Post Event SocialEnd the evening with reflection and great conversation catered by the Collingwood Youth Centre. Enjoy complimentary three sisters soup
