SUMMARY:In the Name of Wild
DESCRIPTION:In the Name of Wild\nBe The Change Film Series\nIn the Name of Wild tells the story of a five-year journey across ten countries in search of the meanings of wild. The documentary film and interactive documentary explore wildness in UNESCO World Heritage sites in Australia\, New Zealand\, Japan\, Thailand\, Italy\, Iceland\, Canada\, Belize\, Ecuador\, and Argentina. \nThroughout ten distinct journeys the authors—a family of three—meet local residents and learn what wildness means to them. Inhabitants’ perspectives teach us what it means to co-exist with wild nature in its myriad forms and push us to reimagine the meanings of wild and the values underlying environmental conservation and heritage preservation. \n \n Tickets\n \n https://vimeo.com/617346092

SUMMARY:Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Confessions of a Fairy’s Daughter\nStarring Alison Wearing \nAlison Wearing returns – by popular demand – to the Theatre Collingwood stage! \nBased on her bestselling memoir\, Confessions of a Fairy’s Daughter tells the story of a young girl growing up with a gay father in the 1980s. Woven through music and imagery\, the comic monologue moves from Alison’s carefree childhood to the moment she learned\, at age twelve\, that her family was a bit more complex than she had thought. \nThe ensuing years were a time of confusion and disbelief\, puff pastry and opera\, bathhouse raids\, scandal and celebration. Balancing intimacy\, history and humour\, this is a captivating tale of family life: deliciously imperfect\, riotously challenging\, and full of life’s great lessons in love. \nConfessions of a Fairy’s Daughter has been performed more than 150 times and has won top awards in virtually every festival in which it has appeared\, including four Fringe Festival Best of Fest awards\, the CBC’s Outstanding Solo Show award\, and Best Dramatic Script at NYC’s United Solo\, the largest festival of solo theatre in the world. \nJoin us for the triumphant return of Alison and her heartfelt\, honest\, deeply funny and personal one-woman show. You won’t want to miss this brilliant portrayal of family\, love\, and forgiveness. \n*Youth and Student Admission – $28.25*\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:The Knitting Pilgrim
DESCRIPTION:The Knitting Pilgrim\nCo-written by Kirk Dunn and Claire Ross Dunn\, Performed by Kirk Dunn \nMeet Kirk – actor\, writer\, knitter\, and PK (Preacher’s Kid). Prompted by the events of 9/11\, Kirk Dunn knit a huge triptych of tapestries\, each 2.8m tall by 1.6m wide\, designed as stained-glass windows\, exploring the commonalities and conflicts of the Abrahamic faiths. What he expected would take 10 months ended up taking him 15 years to complete! \nIn a show that is all about knitting and not about knitting at all\, Kirk looks at the rise of Islamophobia\, anti-Semitism\, and fear of ‘the other’. He delves into the fascinating story of his 15-year journey knitting the tapestries\, his artistic path of self-doubt\, financial despair\, theological questioning and the value of a loving partner who is willing to be a butt-kicking muse. \nYou’ll laugh\, cry\, and even participate in a little bit of knitting yourself as Kirk celebrates diversity\, interfaith understanding\, and the power of art to get us there. This multi-media spectacular includes one-of-a-kind fibre art woven together with modern creative tech and human performance art. This show is for knitters\, students of theology\, admirers of all types of visual\, performance\, and multi-media art\, and anyone participating in the human experience. You do NOT have to know anything about knitting to enjoy this show – but you might walk away as a converted knitter yourself! \n \n*Youth and Student Admission – $28.25*\n \n Tickets

SUMMARY:Wizard of Zenda
DESCRIPTION:Wizard of Zenda -Buddy Melges Documentary\nIn celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Collingwood Yacht Club\, CYC is proud to present Melges: The Wizard of Zenda\, a documentary film about legendary sailor Buddy Melges. This event is a fundraiser for the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital with all profits being donated. The film presentation kicks off a weekend of festivities which includes the Collingwood Invitational Regatta. For more information please visit the CYC website. \nMELGES: The Wizard of Zenda is a documentary about one of the greatest sailors you’ve never heard of. With unlimited access to behind-the-scenes archival footage\, this sports biography captures the UNTOLD story of Buddy Melges\, a tenacious competitor with a fiery attitude and the winning record to back it up. \nYou’ll hear from fellow world class sailors and competitors\, like America’s Cup champion and former ESPN sailing analyst Gary Jobson*; three-time champion Dennis Conner\, the sailor they call ‘Mr. America’s Cup’; John Bertrand\, the Australian skipper who shocked the world by breaking the 132-year U.S. winning streak; and Bill Koch\, the billionaire yachtsman who partnered with Buddy to chase the cup in 1992. \nThis feature length documentary takes you beyond the headlines to explore Buddy’s extraordinary life. With interviews\, archival film footage and video gathered across five decades\, you’ll learn about a sailor from a working-class family in southern Wisconsin who built a resume of winning that made him one of the greatest sailors of all time. \nDiscover the driving force behind Buddy’s continuous quest to challenge himself by moving from class to class to test himself against the greatest sailors in the world. Competitors and historians explain how Buddy sailed not like an engineer\, but as an artist. His sailing was less about science – more about artistic expression. \nWhether art or science\, Buddy was a fierce competitor who shared what he learned with anyone willing to take the time to ask. His legendary career seems almost mystical\, and earned him the well-deserved nickname: The Wizard of Zenda. \n\nTickets

SUMMARY:The Long Day & The Last Guide
DESCRIPTION:The Long Day & The Last Guide\nWe will be showing 2 films! The Last Guide and short film\, The Long Today. \nThe Long Today “When filmmaker Niobe Thompson’s father turned 70 he found a ‘river’ on a map\, repaired one of his old wood canoes\, and invited his family to help him celebrate the big day. Only a few of them turned up.” \nThe Last Guide “Meet Frank Kuiack\, the last traditional fishing guide in Algonquin Park. Kuiack carries a lifetime of stories and wisdom about the Algonquin. His magnetic personality\, skills on the water and knowledge of the park’s intricate lakes and trails has inspired two novels. When Kuiack was eight-years-old\, a group of American anglers offered him $5 to show them where to catch fish – and he’s been making his living as a fishing guide ever since. At 84-years-old and recently diagnosed with bone cancer\, Frank’s health has taken a turn for the worse. While he’s attempted to train guides over the years and pass on his knowledge\, the physically demanding nature of the job has turned away most potential apprentices. Kuiack’s niece\, Sharleen\, has shown a unique ability to go toe-to-toe with Frank on the water but\, despite her ability and love for her uncle\, she remains unsure how to carry on his legacy or whether she desires to be the next “Last Guide.” \n \n Tickets

SUMMARY:Leftovers and the Lottery
DESCRIPTION:Leftovers and the Lottery\nPerformed by Melody Johnson Featuring Allen Cole on piano \nJoin Theatre Collingwood as we experience a thoughtfully curated\, multifaceted portrait of one of America’s finest writers in the form of a one act show. Following her celebrated performance at the 2022 Porchside Festival\, Master of Storytelling Melody Johnson returns to Collingwood to weave another tale centered around Master of Literary Horror\, Shirley Jackson. A multi-media experience\, everyone can and will delight in and relate to this engaging account of Shirley’s work\, centered around family and community. \nComposer Allen Cole and actor Melody Johnson combine reading\, performance\, and live piano playing to Jackson’s newly published letters\, her lesser known psychologically charged stories\, and a haunting retelling of Jackson’s most well-known short story The Lottery. \nBIOS \nShirley Jackson’s dark\, psychological stories rocketed her into the public eye when her short story The Lottery was published in 1948 by the New Yorker. Initially highly controversial\, it was later recognized as a gothic classic and has been included in more anthologies\, freaking out more high school students than perhaps any short story ever written. Her novels The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle are also considered two of the greatest psychological thrillers of the 20th century\, with recent film adaptations. Less remembered today are the “domestic comedy” stories that Jackson wrote in the 1950s. Based on her trials and tribulations as a 1950’s housewife\, and lampooning the antics of her husband and four children\, they were wildly popular\, and first published in magazines like Good Housekeeping\, Collier’s\, and Reader’s Digest. They are the precursors of a genre now referred to as the “MomBlog”. The fact that Jackson could write so authentically in these two hugely different genres has long bewildered readers and critics alike. Perhaps it’s a true reflection of a dichotomy that challenged many women of that time; a great love of family life on one side\, coupled with a deep desire to break free of its limitations. \nAllen Cole\, (Composer/Creator) | Originally from Nova Scotia\, Allen Cole has worked variously as composer\, musical director\, and writer for The Stratford Festival\, Shaw Festival\, the National Arts Centre and many other theatres across the country. He’s won numerous awards\, including four Dora Mavor Moore awards\, six Robert Merritt awards\, and a Best Film Score Award from The Atlantic Film Festival. \nMelody A. Johnson\, (Actor/Creator) | An accomplished creator\, Melody has enjoyed a career of moving between the worlds of comedy and drama.   Since 2010 Melody has toured and produced the self-penned Miss Caledonia throughout Canada\, (premiering at the prestigious Tarragon Theatre in Toronto\, and National Arts Centre in Ottawa)\, and internationally to the United Kingdom. The play garnered two Toronto Dora nominations (Outstanding New Play\, Outstanding Performance 2013.) Theatre Collingwood audiences also enjoyed it\, as well as her Porchside Festival presentation of Person of Interest this past summer. \nShowtimes Thursday\, May 11th – 7:30 PMFriday\, May 12th – 2:00 PM & 7:30 PMSaturday\, May 13th – 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM \n \n Tickets

This event is a fundraiser for the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital with all profits being donated. The film presentation kicks off a weekend of festivities which includes the Collingwood Invitational Regatta. For more information please visit the CYC website:\nCollingwoodyachtclub.com\nMELGES: The Wizard of Zenda is a documentary about one of the greatest sailors you’ve never heard of. With unlimited access to behind-the-scenes archival footage\, this sports biography captures the UNTOLD story of Buddy Melges\, a tenacious competitor with a fiery attitude and the winning record to back it up.\nYou’ll hear from fellow world class sailors and competitors\, like America’s Cup champion and former ESPN sailing analyst Gary Jobson*; three-time champion Dennis Conner\, the sailor they call ‘Mr. America’s Cup’; John Bertrand\, the Australian skipper who shocked the world by breaking the 132-year U.S. winning streak; and Bill Koch\, the billionaire yachtsman who partnered with Buddy to chase the cup in 1992.\nThis feature length documentary takes you beyond the headlines to explore Buddy’s extraordinary life. With interviews\, archival film footage and video gathered across five decades\, you’ll learn about a sailor from a working-class family in southern Wisconsin who built a resume of winning that made him one of the greatest sailors of all time.\nDiscover the driving force behind Buddy’s continuous quest to challenge himself by moving from class to class to test himself against the greatest sailors in the world. Competitors and historians explain how Buddy sailed not like an engineer\, but as an artist. His sailing was less about science – more about artistic expression.\nWhether art or science\, Buddy was a fierce competitor who shared what he learned with anyone willing to take the time to ask. His legendary career seems almost mystical\, and earned him the well-deserved nickname: The Wizard of Zenda.\n* see excerpt from Legends of American Sailing\nFilm description from the Wizard of Zenda website:\nWizardofzenda.com\n \n Tickets

SUMMARY:CanFilmDay - Peace By Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Peace by Chocolate\nCelebrate National Canadian Film Day with the Collingwood Public Library with a FREE film screening of Peace by Chocolate. \nAbout the Film\nAfter the bombing of his family’s chocolate factory\, Tareq Hadhad\, a charming young Syrian refugee\, struggles to settle into small-town life in Antigonish\, Nova Scotia. Despite moving to a new country\, he’s intent on pursuing his dream to become a doctor. But when his father\, Issam\, insists that he must focus on survival\, Tareq and his family move towards a different\, but familiar path: Rebuilding Issam’s chocolate business. When what seemed like a nostalgic attempt to cling onto remnants of an old life past becomes an overnight sensation\, Tareq is shocked. Put in the role of business manager\, he must choose between the demands of an exponentially growing business and an offer to go back to medical school. New challenges arise between a rival chocolatier while the heartbreak of Tareq’s sister left behind in Syria weighs heavily on the family. Nevertheless\, Tareq remains set on his goals\, buoyed by a supportive community of eclectics. As father and son both struggle to find common ground and navigate the complexities of family duty\, the heightening tension between them threatens to tear the family apart.
